Ultra - modern Arty Furniture

Photobucket
Photobucket

This week I wrote an article for a designer furniture company and it got me thinking about my 'dream home' again. So when I was asked to post about Harrogate Interiors, I thought the topic would be quite fitting! I have always been into kitsch / retro, quite cute 'homely' furniture, but this week I have been looking at more modernistic designs which feature abstract shapes and colour, looking like pieces of art in their own right.

I'm going to be honest, the furniture featured in the images above is currently out of my price range, but I can certainly draw upon the designs for inspiration. I particularly love the chic pink Italia Glass tables, which would stand out beautifully against a monochrome colour scheme. I also love the Calligaris fold-down table, which is perfect for houses with small dining areas - I could have done with this in my house! I think this piece of furniture would also work well as a desk, should you wish to use it that way instead.

Granted, not all of the pieces scream 'homely' (especially the furniture featured in the last three images) but I guess it all depends on the type of home you want to live in. Do you prefer houses with a homely / traditional feel, or are you all for arty / modern interiors? I personally think its best to strike a balance between the two! As much as a I love kitsch / retro furniture, it can often look too mix-match and a little cluttered if you are not careful, whereas modern, minimalistic furniture tends to look more clean-cut and stylish.

How would you design your dream home? Do you prefer a more traditional look or something that screams DESIGNER like the homes seen in home interior magazines?

Key Pieces for A/W 2012 - Next Guest Blogger Entry

Photobucket
Charcoal Faux Fur Coat // Baroque Lipsy Dress // Military Knit // Lace Tapered Trousers // Studded Boots
When I saw that Next were running a competition to find a new guest blogger, I simply had to enter! Next are one of my favourite fashion companies and I always enjoy blogging about their latest collections. The winner not only gets to write for Next's Style Secrets blog, but they also win three outfits, up to £150 each.

I don't know about you, but I absolutely love Autumn / Winter, much more so than Spring / Summer. I love being able to wrap up in a chunky knit and slip my feet into my favourite pair of boots (which usually changes every year!) With this in mind I decided to blog about my five key pieces for the season ahead.

1. Faux Fur Coats - I was so pleased to see that faux fur coats were in this season. I practical live in my black faux fur that I bought last year. Not only do they keep you warm and snuggly when it's a little chilly, but they are also perfect for glamming up an outfit. This season the more...how shall I put it? Shaggy? Yes, shaggy style of fur coats are in - have a peek at Fearne Cotton on the October issue of Company Magazine and you'll know exactly what I mean.

2. Baroque Lipsy Dress - This print is literally everywhere and hell yes I love it. I think it is such a versatile print that could be styled in so many different ways. You could style this gorgeous Lipsy dress up with  vintage accessories for a classy look, spiked and studded pieces for an edgy take on the trend, or even chic tribal accessories, for a relaxed daytime look.

3. Military Knit - Military styling is set to play a key role in A/W collections this year. I love this khaki coloured knit, which in fact combines two key A/W trends: military styling and studded embellishments. Despite its masculine traits, military style pieces look super chic clashed with floaty midi dresses and girly floral prints.

4. Lace Tapered Trousers - I'm head over heels in love with these black and nude lace trousers. They are simply perfect for creating your own take on A/W's Gothic Romance trend. Wear them with ankle boots and a leather-look jacket for a chic daytime look, dressing them up with metal toe capped heels and a sheer  peter pan collar blouse, for a night out in the city.

5. Studded Ankle Boots - Last, but certainly not least, I have chosen this gorgeous pair of studded ankle boots. You simply can't go wrong with stud embellished clothing and accessories this season. I have already seen many bloggers doing their own DIY projects on their clothing! Wear these ankle boots with a pair of skinny jeans or a skater style dress for an edgy look.

So what do you think of my A/W picks? I hope they have left you feeling excited for the season ahead. I'm practically going to have to sit on my hands to stop myself from purchasing them!

Gorgeous jewellery from Seasons Online

Photobucket
1. Carriage Pendant // 2. Parisian Cafe Necklace // 3. Metal Collar Necklace //
 4. Seven Dwarfs Necklace // 5. Moustache Stud Earrings // 6. Pearl Collar Necklace
I don't know about you but I love jewellery that is a little different and has the ability to put a smile on my face. It's not often that I buy jewellery on the high street or online, because I tend to wear either sentimental pieces that I have received on special occasions or the jewellery that I make myself. However saying this, when I do see something ultimately unique and quirky, like some of the pieces stocked by Seasons Online I find myself giving in to my temptations and have to make them mine.

Seasons Online stock a range of fashion and costume jewellery, as well as other girly things like nail gels and hair accessories. The pieces they stock are similar to the jewellery you see on the high street, but for much fairer prices! I sometimes think that high street stores put a slightly hefty price tag on their jewellery, especially to say it has been massed produced, however Seasons Online offer very reasonable prices for their jewellery - the earrings featured above are just £2.99 and the collars £9.99 and £12.99 respectively.

Two of the pieces that really caught my eye were the 'Parisian Cafe Scene' necklace and the Disney-inspired  'Seven Dwarfs' necklace. I have never seen anything quite like the Parisian Cafe Scene necklace, it would certainly be a talking point! I would wear it with a plain top or dress to draw attention to it's beauty. I am always drawn to Disney inspired jewellery, having loved it so much as a child. I think this Seven Dwarfs necklace is so quirky and would look lovely poking out under a peter pan collared dress.

Although I only stock pieces that I have designed and made myself in my online jewellery store, I know a lot of bloggers have 'blog shops' where they sell jewellery and accessories that they love and that
fit in with their own personal style. I thought it might be useful to know that Seasons Online actually sell wholesale costume jewellery as well, if anyone would be interested stocking pieces like those featured above!

Kelly Brook for New Look AW 2012

Photobucket
Boucle Jacket // Leopard Print Dress // Lace Playsuit //
Boucle Shorts // Studded Ankle Boots // Lace Boots

Kelly Brook has recently launched her AW12 collection for New Look, drawing inspiration from the 1950s. Known for her beautiful curved figure, Kelly has designed her clothing line to flatter the most feminine of shapes, accentuating the waist and sculpting curves. I particularly love the textured boucle jacket and shorts which could be worn together with a pretty blouse for an office chic look. Dress it down with flats, or style it up with a pair of sky scraper heels.

I have always favoured 50s style shapes when it comes to dresses as I have a small waist in comparison to my hips. I love the cut out detail on the back of the leopard print dress and think the neckline is really flattering. Kelly's boots are 'bang on trend' (cringe) this season, with the stylish studded detailing and the lace shoe boots are a great way of adding both texture and glamour to plain outfits.

Finish off your 50s pin-up inspired look with a slick of red lipstick and voluminous curled hair.

Has anything caught your eye from this collection?

Monday's Most Wanted featuring Daisy Street

Photobucket
Kitty Flats / Biker Jacket / Studded Chelsea Boots
As you can see, I have gone for an all black theme for today's Most Wanted post. It wasn't intentional, these just happened to be my 'Most Wanted' items, from the lovely brand that is Daisy Street. I have seen Daisy Street on a few other blogs recently and they are definitely starting to become more well known in the world of e-tail, with a great range of both clothing and accessories. I particularly like the shoes and boots they stock on their website. The studded chelsea boots are amazing. I can definitely see myself purchasing these at some point, to go with skinny jeans and skater dresses. I also love the Kitty Flats that have certainly done their round on the blogosphere. Styled similarly to the Charlotte Olympia pair, but at just a small fraction of the price (£20.99) - because really, there isn't many of us who can justify spending £465 on a pair of flat shoes, as much as we'd like to!

I am currently looking for a biker / leather look jacket, as James is planning on buying me one for my birthday. I know I'd get so much wear out of one, as at the moment I don't have any jackets I can really wear on a night out, when it's too cold to leave the house in just a dress. I love the gold studded detail on the biker jacket from Daisy Street - it is definitely a contender amongst a couple of others I've spotted from Topshop.

Have you bought anything from Daisy Street?

Living Room Luxe ft Interior Addict

Photobucket
Finn Juhl Designer Sofa // Lucce Walnut Side Table // Lucce Bookshelf // Bird Cushion
Tell me I'm not the only one that spends ages viewing homeware websites, dreaming of my perfect house? I was recently introduced to Interior Addict (such an awesome name for a homeware company) and I got a little excited over some of their gorgeous Lucce furniture. Unfortunately I am not in a position to fill my little living room with this wonderful designer furniture, but a girl can dream! Along with designer sofas and other furniture they have a range of quirky floor lamps, including some that look like they are straight from a Hollywood film set. Although I'm usually into quite kitsch / retro interiors, James and I have agreed that we will keep our house (in the future) quite modern and sophisticated, apart from one room, which I can decorate all vintagey - a perfect little haven for my jewellery making activities!

I absolutely love the shape of the Finn Juhl sofa, which also comes in black. It looks both comfortable and stylish, though I would have to throw a few cushions on there - perhaps the birdy one above? The bookshelf and side tables dark walnut wood looks so sophisticated and will add warmth to your living room - perfect for the colder months ahead.

For more homeware ideas pop over to Pinterest and view my living room luxe and dream home boards!

Lace Dress - Room 31 // Patent Shoes - New Look

Photobucket
Peter Pan Collar and cute ribbon buttons!
This lovely sixties inspired lace dress is by Yumi and it's my new favourite. I bought it from Room 31, who had reduced it from £55 to just £15 - at such a great price, I couldn't resist making a purchase! It fits perfectly and has gorgeous detailing like the peter pan collar and cute ribbon buttons. I chose to pair it with opaque black tights and my patent red shoes, for a daytime look. I am actually going to slip on my rusty red coloured cardigan, when I go out for dinner later, as it's a little chilly outside! I can definitely see myself wearing this on nights out too, with thinner tights and big heels. If you haven't already seen what Room 31 have to offer, I suggest you pop over to their website, right after you finish reading this post - they currently have some beautiful House of Dereon dresses (I love the leopard print dress)

I'm hoping my new hair dye will arrive from Cheap Smells this week - I bought it from there as it was reduced by four or something pounds, and I like to pay as little as I can for things like that. I'm no longer going to have gingery dyed hair as I'm going for a dark mahogany brown colour. Can't wait!
xo

Ps, I hope you like the new blog colours, I've been having a little play around with them over the last couple of days. I really want an illustrator to design a shop button or even perhaps a banner for the Megan Jane Jewellery store, so if you can recommend anyone, please leave their website in the comments below.

Monday's Most Wanted: Joy

Photobucket
1. Vinnie Geometric Print Dress // 2. Alana Shirt Dress // 3. Cynthia Pleated Playsuit //
4. Lace Blouse // 5. Polka Dot Knitted Jumper // 6. Green Hooded Mac
Today's Most Wanted post features the wonderful Joy! I recently came across their website and pretty much fell in love with everything I saw, especially the six items featured above. Joy stocks a range of hand selected brands including Louche, their principal label. Their clothing has a retro / vintage feel to it, perfect for those who like to stand out and stray away from high street fashion every now and again. One of the great things about Joy is that they only stock a small number of each line, making your purchase all the more exclusive
and special!

Their retro inspired dresses are perfect for winter, paired with woolly tights, brogues and a satchel for day wear and black opaque tights, colourful heels and an oversized clutch bag for evenings out. I think the lace blouse featured above would look lovely tucked into a pair of high waisted jeans. You could even throw the polka dot knit over the top, with the collar peeking out, when the weather gets a little cooler.

Have you bought anything from Joy, or visited their website?

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Review

Photobucket
YVES SAINT LAURENT - LUXURIOUS MASCARA FOR A FALSE LASH EFFECT
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

I recently registered on the 'What's in My Handbag' website and was lucky enough to get to try the Yves Saint Laurent False Lash Effect mascara, or should I say 'Mascara Volume Effect Faucx Cils.' I am not one to usually use 'high end' makeup, the main reason being that I don't feel I can justify the money most of the time, however since this was a free sample, I was eager to see what all of the fuss was about.

I have to say I was completely surprised - the YSL mascara is the best mascara I have EVER used! I like my lashes to look really long and dramatic (like false lashes) so this mascara was perfect for me. I already have quite long lashes anyway, but I like to use mascaras that thicken the lashes, with a pure black colour. The  YSL mascara feels quite wet, but I find it really easy to apply and it doesn't feel heavy at all. I  know some people have said it doesn't dry quick enough, but I haven't found this to be the case. You can get away with just dipping the applicator in once and using it for both eyes, however I sometimes like to add a couple of coats, to get the over dramatic lash look that I like to have.

The full size mascara comes in luxurious gold packaging and retails at around £23.00. I have found it for a couple of pounds cheaper on both Feel Unique and Cheap Smells, who also offer free standard UK delivery. Although £23 may seem way too expensive for a mascara (especially if you're used to buying drug store brands like me) I would definitely be more than happy to pay this for the YSL mascara, as it really is the best mascara I have come across for the sort of lash look I desire.

Have you tried this mascara? Let me know your thoughts about it in the comments below! Oh and if you would like to sign up to What's in My Handbag for the chance to try some of the latest beauty products yourself, feel free to follow my special link here.

Summer in the city

Photobucket
Floral Print Dress - F&F // Wedges - New Look  // Bag & Belt - H&M

Photobucket
Romantic Red Rose Birdcage - Megan Jane Jewellery
So just as we thought summer had left us and everyone was getting ready for winter coats and faux fur cuffed boots, the sun decided to grace us with its presence! Not realising how warm it was this morning, I went out in jeans, a cardigan AND a coat - big mistake. I soon changed when I got home. I keep giggling at the first photo above, as it looks like I'm trying to hide something up my dress! This wasn't the case, I promise, the wind just blew at a really inappropriate moment. This lovely little day dress is one I picked up from Tesco for a very reasonable £15. It has a lovely peter pan collar and little buttons down the front. I teamed it with my sandy coloured wedges, which have made my legs look even more like milk bottles (not good) and my bright red bag. My red bag from H&M is HUGE, I think I could probably sit in it, though I can't say I've tried...

I'm having a barbecue (if the weather holds out) at my parent's house tomorrow to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary, which was actually a couple of weeks ago, however the weather was too rubbish to do it then. I am looking forward to sitting in the sun, drinking a glass or two of wine and eating as many vegetarian burgers as I can!

On my wishlist...

Photobucket
Windsor Dress // Mel Flats // Bunny Bag // Own Knit // Heart Patch Cardi // Crushed Velvet Dress

1.  I think Sugar Hill Boutique have outdone themselves with this beautiful horse and carriage print dress. I love the contrast of the dreamy navy blue against the crisp white collar and cuffs. The long sleeves make this the perfect Autumn / Winter dress.

2. I love the look of these Melissa flats, though I'm trying to decide whether the Melflex plastic would be comfortable? If you have tried them please let me know, as I really want to purchase this pair!

3. This vintage inspired rabbit bag is the perfect colour for the season ahead. I love the rabbit embellishment and think this would look lovely with day or evening wear.

4. A quirky, cute owl knit - need I say more?

5. I've been wanting a jumper or cardigan with elbow patches for ages and love the fact this cardi has heart patches! Definitely thinking that this will have to be one of the newest additions to my A/W wardrobe.

6. I know not everyone likes velvet, but I happen to love it! I love the colours featured in this velvet dress from Pop Couture, it reminds me a little of a green velvet dress I owned as a child.

What do you think of my wish list items? What are your favourites?

I absolutely adore these little rings and couldn't resist making them in all sorts of colours! The ring bases are adjustable and come in either silver plated or bronze tone. I think these look so lovely if you wear two or three at a time, or if you match them with a pair of studs. The daisy rings are just 99p each, with the daisy ring and studs sets priced at £2.99 - perfect as a gift, or even a little treat to yourself!

Megan Jane Jewellery will also be selling customised jewellery boxes in the near future. I am very excited about this and hope that you will love them once they are finished! They will be sold both at craft fairs and online - don't worry, you'll get a sneak
peek on here first.

I always love to hear what you think about my jewellery - let me know what your favourite pieces are! :)

Most Wanted: Dahlia dresses

Photobucket
Brocade Pleated dress // Organza Overlay dress // Pinafore dress
Dahlia, beautiful Dahlia, their dresses are the definition of perfection. The three featured above are from their A/W collection and I adore each and every one of them. Brocade items seem to be a 'must-have' for the season ahead and it looks like collars are still every bit as desirable. I love the girlyness of the organza overlay dress, which also comes in navy and white, perfect for those who struggle to wear pale pinks. I also really love the mustard pinafore dress, though I can't seem to see it on the website at the moment, so I have linked to the navy version, which is equally as lovely. I love how they've paired it with pointed wedges and a white blouse to achieve a school-girl-chic look. I bought a beautiful pink heart print dress from Dahlia last Christmas and it is still one of my weekly-wears! I can definitely vouch for the quality of their clothing and it is easily one of the most beautiful dresses I own.

Are these dresses on your most wanted list?

You are my sweetest downfall

Photobucket
Photobucket
Top - Topshop // High waisted jeans - Topshop // Boots - ASOS // Bag - New Look
Quite a simple / plain outfit from me today, but it's nice to have a change from printed dresses and pumps some days. I absolutely love these boots, like seriously love them, but they are so difficult to walk in -well, for me anyway! I'm just not so good in heels and these do make me super tall, since I'm already 5 ft 8 without any shoes on. I was going to sell them at one point, but I just can't bear to part with them and they will be lovely for Autumn / Winter outfits.

My black top actually has a rather strange back, it has three bows across it, with holes in between (great description Megan). It's the one from Topshop that they had in all different colours a couple of years ago - I'm sure pretty much everyone owned one. Every time I wear it I'm undecided whether or not I actually like the style of the back, but it's the only black top with longer sleeves that I own, so I roll with it anyway.

Can you believe it's September already? Where has the year gone?! I turn 22 in a month and 2 days - eek! I feel like August really flew by but I accomplished quite a few of the things I wanted to do (work wise) during the month, so I'm a happy bunny. Apologies for not blogging much this week, James was off for two days at the beginning of the week, which threw my routine completely out of the window, and then I had a whole day sorting out my business books, and then spent the rest of the week working. I did get to go out last night to Bopp with a few of my friends. I had lots of fun dancing to tunes from the 50s!

Thank you to everyone who has entered my giveaway so far, there is still a couple of weeks until it closes, so plenty of time to enter if you haven't already! I mentioned it on Facebook and Twitter yesterday, but I will soon be selling customised jewellery boxes! I can't wait to make a start on them and will be sure to blog about them before I launch them on the website, so you can have a sneak peak!

Hope everyone's having a lovely Saturday xo
