What I've been reading | October

Source: We Heart It
This month I've only managed to read one book because I've been so busy, but it just so happens to be the book everyone is talking about, Gone Girl.

Now if you read my 'On My Reading List' post last week, you will know that at that point I was only a quarter of the way through the book and really wasn't enjoying it. It starts off very slow, but I'm pleased to say that it does get better! There's this big twist in the middle of the book and from that point you'll find that you just can't put it down.

It's really difficult to talk about the plot without revealing any spoilers so I've shared the blurb below...

'Who are you?

What have we done to each other?

These are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren't made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife?'

I haven't read many 'thrillers' so it was a relatively new genre to me, but I have to say that once the book picked up the pace and things got interesting, I really enjoyed trying to guess what was going to happen next. You can't really predict it though, the characters are so manipulative and just as you think you know what's going to happen there's a twist.

I know many people have said they found the ending really disappointing but for me this wasn't really the case. I'm almost indifferent about it and I think that's mainly down to the fact that I never really made an emotional connection with the characters. Never have I read a book and not rooted for anyone or felt any emotional connection, but this was the case for me with Gone Girl and I think that's why I was able to accept that the ending was what it was.

I am looking forward to watching the film next to see how it compares to the book!
